Is the sauce truly made from buffalo?

There are undoubtedly several stories and various recollections of who discovered the first Buffalo hot wings when it comes to the history of Buffalo flavoring and hot wings. The name belongs to a small, family-run restaurant named Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York, and has nothing to do with buffalo or bison in real life. It is renowned for being the first location to provide this delectable food.

The tavern was purchased by Frank and Teressa Bellissimo in 1939. It is recognized as the “Home of the original chicken wing” and is still in business today. Frank has told this tale numerous times over the years, claiming that the creation of Buffalo hot chicken wings was the result of a simple error.

Here’s how the story goes

According to legend, Frank and Teressa were supposed to receive backs and necks in 1964, but instead they received a sizable delivery of chicken wings. Teressa, Frank’s wife, made the decision to find a purpose for all those extra chicken wings rather than letting them go to waste. After experimenting in the kitchen, she decided to broil the wings and then cover them in a homemade, extra-spicy chili sauce. After that, she served celery and bleu cheese dressing beside the hot chicken wings.

On a busy Friday night, Dominic, the son of Frank and Teressa, also proposed the notion of serving the wings to their predominantly Catholic clients beyond midnight. It looked like a great idea to serve this new wonderful dish at midnight as many Catholics at the time had a custom of only eating fish and vegetables on Fridays.

Whatever inspired Teressa to prepare these wings, they were an immediate success. The Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York, soon added the buffalo wings to its menu after learning about how well-liked they were by locals. They have become a standard in many eateries all around the country after more than 50 years.

And there is football

But after the Buffalo Bills football club advanced to the Super Bowl in four straight seasons from 1990 to 1993, there was a major push. In those years, the media outlets that covered the team and the city highlighted regional events and cuisine, including, of course, the hot chicken known as Buffalo Wings. Following that, the chicken wing craze arose, and football fans adopted hot, spicy chicken wings as their go-to snack to enjoy while watching the game.

Did you know this?

Butter that has been melted, spicy sauce, and cayenne pepper make up the classic buffalo wing sauce. To counteract the spiciness of the sauce, celery and bleu cheese were first served with the wings at the Anchor Bar.

Today, additional foods that are seasoned with the fiery sauce first used on the “original” chicken wings are referred to as “buffalo.”

Our Buffalo Salmon Burger at Salmon Brokers now includes the seasoning that Frank and Teressa first created. The typical buffalo flavoring is present in the Buffalo Salmon Burger to give it the proper flavor and to please your palette.

Heinz offers assurances that the use of their manufacturing procedures and raw materials in the supply chain complies with standards established by HAC.
