Is Almond Milk Better Than Half And Half?

Many individuals don’t give much thought to what they put in their morning coffee, yet it makes a difference in terms of daily calories, sugar intake, and saturated fat levels.

Some of the comparisons are self-evident (heavy cream having more calories and saturated fat than whole milk, for example), but others are startling. Did you realize that coconut milk has nearly as much fat as heavy cream? And did you know that fat-free half-and-half contains twice the amount of sugar as ordinary half-and-half? When you add flavored creamers, nut milks, and other variants to the mix, it’s easy to become perplexed.

Let’s start with a diagram. From classic cream to unsweetened almond milk, my team and I compared the 11 most common liquids that people add to their coffee. We looked at total calories, fat content, saturated fat content, protein grams, and sugar levels, then compiled our findings into a simple chart.

Let’s take a look at who won: Whole milk, pea milk (Ripple), and soy milk are tied for the highest protein content, with almond milk having the fewest calories.

Let’s move on to the ones you should be wary about. Many people believe that coconut milk is good for their hearts, yet it’s high in saturated fat and calories! Another item to consider is the French vanilla coffee creamer, which contains 40 grams of sugar in a half cup and might throw your entire day’s nutrition plan off!

The Nutrition Facts on the packets listed a variety of serving sizes. Others, like whole milk and almond milk, asked for a tablespoon of heavy cream or a teaspoon of vanilla creamer, while others, like heavy cream and vanilla creamer, specified their nutrition information by the cup. The serving amount for many other creamers was 2 tablespoons. How could we make a comparison between such disparate amounts?

We decided to compare the equal amounts of each creamer for the most obvious comparison. So we did some math and compared each liquid’s half-cup serving size. Of course, if you only use a splash or a dash of one, the effect will be less than if you pour a half cup or more.

And, just between you and me, Ripple is the clear winner. It’s a dairy-free, plant-based half-and-half alternative created using pea protein. I can cook with it, and I especially enjoy using the unsweetened version in soups.

Is almond milk a good substitute for half and half?

Half and half is probably not something you have on hand unless you use it in your coffee. So, if a recipe asks for it, what can you substitute? Here are a few alternatives to try, including one that is dairy-free and two that whip up quickly.

Milk and Heavy Cream

Because half and half is simply a 50/50 mixture of milk and heavy cream, making your own half and half is the best option if you have both on hand. It’s traditionally made with whole milk and light cream, but if you have a different sort of milk or cream on hand, don’t worry about it. Even whether you use a lower fat milk or a higher fat cream, you’ll come near to these ratios. Store-bought half and half includes between 10.5 percent and 18 percent milk fat. It’ll whip just like store-bought half-and-half since it’s the real stuff.

Milk and Butter

Use one tablespoon of melted butter mixed with one cup of milk in place of the half-and-half in your recipe. The butter will raise the fat level of the milk, giving it a flavor and consistency that is closer to half and half. This substitution will not whip, so if you’re creating ice cream or any recipe that asks for half & half, you’ll need to use something different.

Evaporated Milk

Do you have a can of evaporated milk stashed away in your pantry? It can be used in place of half and half. It is significantly sweeter and has a comparable consistency. Just keep in mind that this alternative will not whip.

Coconut Cream and Dairy-Free Milk

Looking for a dairy-free or vegan half-and-half substitute? The best choice is to use a 50/50 mixture of coconut cream and your favorite dairy-free milk. Simply refrigerate a can of coconut milk until the cream separates from the milk and rises to the surface. Then, skim out the cream and combine it with an equal amount of dairy-free milk in a blender (almond, rice, soy, etc.). Substitute half and half for the half and half in your recipe.

Because coconut cream has a high fat content, it should whip easily. Make sure to think about how the coconut cream and milk will affect the flavor of your dish.

Is half-and-half better for you than milk?

Half-and-half and 1% milk are both better options than non-dairy creamers. They have fewer additives and are higher in vitamins and minerals. However, 1 percent milk is the best choice between these two dairy options because it has less saturated fat and cholesterol than half and half. FNP, MyPlate, and the Dietary Guidelines all encourage us to choose low-fat or fat-free dairy products, so this should be no surprise.

If you prefer the other options, make the adjustment to 1 percent milk gradually. You’ll grow used to the flavor difference and soon appreciate your healthier coffee just as much as your current one.
