What is the deal with MSG?

MSG, or monosodium glutamate, is a flavor enhancer found in thousands of items you and your family consume on a regular basis, especially if you eat the majority of your food as processed foods or in restaurants, as do the majority of Americans. It is highly addicting and enhances the flavor of meals.

I don’t like to scare people into eating, but I feel compelled to share some of what I’ve learned with you. For many years, we have tried to improve our eating habits in our house. We’ve done it gradually, and the majority of it now seems second nature. We read labels, avoid high fructose corn syrup, haven’t had milk in over 7 years, and stay away from MSG-containing foods like the plague. It’s a gradual process that you go through once you’ve figured out what’s excellent and what isn’t.

Make adjustments a little at a time

I understand that it may not appear to be a major concern because EVERYONE eats this food. You may also believe that you cannot prevent it; yet, you CAN and MUST. Start reading labels and be brave enough to return items to the shelf if they contain these ingredients. It is NOT VALUE FOR MONEY! Isn’t it always about consuming as many WHOLE FOODS as you can? I realize it’s easier said than done. Do your best, appreciate food, and enjoy eating it.

Enough with the nonsense. Let’s return to the topic of how to prepare a delicious salad dressing that you won’t have to worry about.

  • 1 1/2 tsp. Italian Dressing I make my own using this fantastic recipe, but you can also use one of the store-bought Italian Season packets. Make sure there aren’t any bad additives in there, though.

The Corn Refiners Association has gone to great lengths to convince the public that high fructose corn syrup is natural and contains the same natural sugars as table sugar. Both parties can point to peer-reviewed studies to back up their arguments.

The Corn Refiners Association sponsored multiple televised commercials in September 2008, claiming that high fructose corn syrup is manufactured from corn, has the same nutritional value as sugar, and is safe in moderation. In compared to other goods, their campaign includes evidence to back up their argument that high fructose corn syrup is not a major factor to obesity.

Several other studies have found evidence that significant amounts of fructose stimulate triglyceride synthesis, which can lead to insulin resistance. This is linked to the development of type 2 diabetes.

There is evidence to support both viewpoints, and the verdict will not be reached until more research and evaluation is completed.

Always eat full stuff! This includes meals like fruits and vegetables that have undergone minimal preparation. Because many of the elements in processed foods aren’t naturally occurring, eating something natural is always preferable. However, because high fructose corn syrup is included in so many processed foods, avoiding it may be difficult, especially if you’re on a budget (these products tend to be cheaper). Many processed foods are nutritionally inferior to fruits and vegetables. If the fact that fruits and some vegetables contain sugar worries you, keep in mind that the sugar in them is naturally occurring. Fresh, frozen, canned, dry, or 100 percent juice fruits and vegetables have not been linked to an increase in obesity rates. Simply check the food label on canned and packaged goods to ensure that they are not packed with sugar syrup. Also, make sure you get 100% juice with no added sugar! Overall, keep in mind that avoiding high fructose corn syrup is difficult, so eat it in moderation. When choosing between a whole food (such as fruits and vegetables) and a product containing high fructose corn syrup, go for the healthier alternative!

I’m going to talk about the Costco Olive Garden Signature Italian Dressing today. If you’ve ever visited an Olive Garden restaurant and enjoyed the unending salad and breadsticks, this Costco salad dressing is very similar to what they serve!

Costco Culinary Treasures Avocado Goddess salad dressing, Costco Kewpie Deep Roasted Sesame Dressing & Marinade, and the highly popular Costco dill pickle salad kit with a great creamy dill ranch salad dressing are some more salad dressings I recently reviewed.

This can be found in the non-refrigerated department towards the front of the store among jams, various dressings, sauces, and marinades. 1025898 is the item number.


This tastes extremely close to the salad dressing given in Olive Garden restaurants, albeit not identical.

So, what’s the flavor of Olive Garden Italian Dressing? It’s tangy and salty to the extreme! It has a strong Italian flavor and a strong vinegar flavor. The garlic and cheese are easily discernible. It’s a delicious, almost overpowering dressing, so a little goes a long way on a salad!


After opening, the dressing must be refrigerated, and the best before date on our salad dressing is just over six months from the date we bought it.

You may use it in a pasta salad, a green salad, on roasted veggies, or even as a chicken or pork marinade!


Olive Garden Signature Italian Dressing has 80 calories, eight grams of fat, two grams of carbs, zero grams of fiber, two grams of sugar, less than a gram of protein, and 540 mg of sodium in two tablespoons.

Salad dressings with even more calories and fat per tablespoon than this dressing for two teaspoons have been seen. It’s still not the healthiest salad dressing on the market, but a little goes a long way.
