The name of the Dragon Drink, however, refers more to the base drink utilized in its composition than it does to a mythological creature, unlike the Unicorn Frappuccino from a few years earlier. The Dragon Drink, in my opinion, is more akin to the Pink Drink than the former; both take one of Starbucks’ vibrant Refreshers beverages and blend them with Coconutmilk to create a fruity, creamy, and extremely Instagrammable delight. But unlike the Pink Drink, which gained popularity in 2016 and was added to the Starbucks menu formally in 2017, the Dragon Drink begins with the Mango Dragonfruit Refresher.

The Mango Dragonfruit Refresher is a juice-like beverage with mango and dragon fruit flavors that was first added to the menu as a new permanent item in the summer of 2018. It is shaken with ice to blend and chill it and is served with a scoop of real chopped dragon fruit, or pitaya. Red pitayas, which are dragon fruits, have remarkable, vivid pink flesh when they are ripe, which is where the color of the fruit originates.

The Mango Dragonfruit Refresher has caffeine like all other Starbucks Refreshers, but not because it contains coffee or espresso.
