When sickness strikes, everyone has a go-to remedy, and one of ours has always been Elderberry (Sambucus Nigra) Syrup, which has been shown to minimize the symptoms and length of time that cold and flu viruses last.
Indeed, a study from a few years ago discovered that chemicals found in elderberries worked against H1N1 in the same way that Tamiflu did! If you ask me, those are quite astounding results for a small berry!
One of my complaints about store-bought elderberry syrups is that they’re high in sugar and carbs, so a few tablespoons a day can jeopardize your ketogenic diet. Although there are sugar-free elderberry syrup options, they all appear to contain stevia, which I am sensitive to.
The expense of store-bought elderberry syrup is another issue; a small bottle can cost about $20 for around 8oz. Ouch.
As a result, I decided to prepare my own keto elderberry syrup, which provided me with all of the same immunity-boosting health benefits for a fraction of the price.
On Amazon, I purchased a pound of dried organic elderberries for roughly $20. With that amount of berries, I can produce around half a gallon of keto elderberry syrup all for less than the cost of one 8-ounce bottle of store-bought!
Did I mention it’s incredibly simple? I cook the ingredients, combine them, drain them, and store them in the fridge until I need them.
While my syrup was simmering, I added some sliced ginger, cinnamon sticks, and orange zest strips, which gave it a great flavor. It’s great enough to eat on its own, but it’s also tasty enough to put on yogurt or cream cheese pancakes!
In addition to this keto elderberry syrup, we take Vitamin C, Zinc, and Oregano Oil when we have a cold or flu-like symptom, which helps us feel better quickly.
I prefer to drink this keto elderberry syrup in a cup of hot tea with some added ginger and orange peel to relieve a sore throat. You may also make ice cubes out of the syrup and then put them in water to drink cool.

Elderberries have always been one of my go-to cures for preventing and treating disease. Sambucus nigra, called elderberries, is a fruit-bearing shrub native to North America and Europe. They’re high in flavonoids, which are antioxidant-rich natural substances that protect cells from harm and infections. Vitamins A and B, as well as considerable levels of vitamin C and amino acids, are found in elderberry. By increasing your immune system, all of these nutrients can help you stay healthy and avoid diseases.
Over the last two decades, elderberries have been studied for their medicinal benefits, including their naturally high levels of immune-boosting compounds, anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties (which have been shown to help people recover faster from colds and flu), and possible weight-loss effects.
In her research, Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu of Hadassah-Hebrew University discovered that the antioxidant qualities of elderberry inhibit the enzyme viruses utilize to infect healthy cells in the nose and throat lining. In 2009, Dr. Andrew Catchpole examined the same elderberry extract that had been used in the 1995 and 2004 tests against H1N1. RetroscreenVirology was found to be 68 percent more efficient against H1N1 virus than placebo in an undisclosed double-blind research done in London.
Elderberry tea helps to clear congestion, lower fever, and soothe sore throats. Elderberries should never be eaten raw; instead, they should be cooked and filtered, as the seeds can emit deadly hydrocyanic acid when broken, chewed, or pulverized.
Free radicals have the ability to kill cells. Only chokecherries absorbed more free radicals, according to a study conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture. Black elderberries absorbed 1.5 times the amount of antioxidants as cranberries and more than double the amount of antioxidants as blueberries. When oxygen interacts with specific compounds, free radicals are atoms or groups of atoms with an odd, unpaired number of electrons.
According to an observational study undertaken by C. Chrubasik and associates from the Institute of Forensic Medicine, University of Freiburg, Germany, elderberry may help you lose weight. The participants in the trial drank elderberry juice enhanced with elderberry flower and berry powder extracts, as well as asparagus-based extracts, on a daily basis. The authors discovered that this herbal formula benefited not just the subjects’ weight, but also their blood pressure, physical and emotional well-being. To corroborate these clinical findings, more research is needed.
