You probably already know turmeric is beneficial for your health unless you’ve been hiding out in a scientific research bubble at the bottom of the ocean for the past few years. You are also aware that adding black pepper to it can help it absorb better. But should you, really?

The long-held belief that black pepper is an essential companion for the optimum use of turmeric is being challenged by new research. Experts are now asking questions like: Is black pepper really necessary to receive all that turmeric-based cancer-fighting goodness? What about flavors that would essentially be ruined by a hot kick better saved for curry? What about smoothies, tea, or a few sweet health blasts?

Let’s look at these issues and see what function pepper should serve in the overall turmeric strategy.
