How To Make Dry Taco Seasoning?

Making your own taco seasoning is quick and simple. You may season food to your preferences and always have fresh seasoning on hand.


  • one teaspoon of chili powder
  • 14 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 14 teaspoon powdered onion
  • Crushed red pepper flakes, 1/4 teaspoon
  • dried oregano, 1/4 teaspoon
  • 1/2teaspoonpaprika
  • Cumin, ground, 1 1/2 tablespoons
  • 1 tablespoon of salt (or regular salt)
  • black pepper, 1 teaspoon


Combine salt, pepper, oregano, paprika, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, red pepper flakes, and chili powder in a small bowl. Use an airtight container for storage. roughly 2 3/4 tablespoons are produced.

How to use: For every pound of meat, use roughly 2 tablespoons of the taco spice. Depending on your preference, use more or less. Cook the meat, then drain the fat. Add a little over 1/2 cup of water along with your taco spice. Until the water is absorbed, simmer and stir.

Taco seasoning from the store typically contains a thickening ingredient. There are two possibilities if you want the same amount of savoriness as a prepared mixture:

In fact, when I have beef or turkey defrosting, I usually abandon my original intentions and make taco salads instead. Something about taco meat’s dependability and adaptability always grabs my attention. And simple, too. That’s tough to top.

A few weeks ago, I provided my recipe for the BEST homemade taco seasoning blend, but I thought the taco meat preparation method merited its own article.

After all, it takes a few extra steps in addition to combining herbs and spices to transform ground beef in a skillet into properly seasoned and juicy taco meat.

You won’t have to click back and forth between blogs since I’ve included the spices and amounts of my favorite taco seasoning in the recipe card below for your convenience. Contrary to some store-bought spice blends, this one is well-balanced, not overly spicy (though you may up the cayenne to make it as spicy as you prefer), and free of MSG, preservatives, and gluten.

Remember that the amounts listed below are for seasoning one pound of meat. To make subsequent batches of taco meat quickly, double the spice mixture by two, three, or four and store in an airtight container.

I can confirm from my experience that this approach is fantastic for both ground beef and ground turkey. Use whatever suits you best! Whenever possible, I switch between serving beef or turkey as the protein in our major dishes, depending on how much red meat is on our weekly menu.

Before continue with this taco meat recipe, I always drain the fat from ground beef after it has been cooked and crumbled. As a result, I don’t think it really matters what lean meat to fat ratio I purchase.

Any of 80/20, 85/15, 90/10, or anything else you like or have available will do. We’re not relying on fat for this because the next process makes the taco meat incredibly juicy.

Spread the taco seasoning over the ground meat once it has been placed back in the skillet and the fat has been drained (if using beef). I realize it appears to have a lot of seasoning. like excessively. But I can assure you that everything turns out for the best.

The seasoning was just added when I took the second photo up there. I had very little fat to drain off because that is ground turkey. The situation is about to improve…

You should turn up the heat to a medium-highish setting and add about three-quarters of a cup of water after placing the cooked, crumbled beef back on the pan and flavoring it with taco seasoning. (It need not be extremely accurate.)

The moisture originates from this. The taco meat will simmer, allowing the various seasonings to evenly cover the crumbles. Keep cooking until almost all of the water has evaporated; at that time, everything is prepared for serving.

Taco meat recipe notes:

  • The handmade taco seasoning isn’t particularly spicy, as noted below. If you want it hotter, add more cayenne pepper.
  • Before adding the spice and when the steak has finished cooking, drain the fat. Turkey typically doesn’t need to be drained, in my experience.

Can chili powder be substituted for taco seasoning?

Taco seasoning and chili seasoning might resemble one another somewhat. Both typically contain between 5 and 8 components. The main distinction between the two is that chili seasoning will contain more paprika and chili powder. Cumin will probably be more prevalent in taco seasoning. These two spices can be used interchangeably in a pinch with only a slight difference in flavor.

Is taco seasoning the same as seasoning for chicken tacos?

Although they are similar, chicken taco seasoning and ordinary taco seasoning differ in a few ways. The spice for chicken tacos is frequently milder and contains less cumin. I have a formula that I use for regular taco seasoning, and compared to the chicken version, it contains more chili powder and cumin. A larger role is also played by paprika and oregano. Overall, the chicken version is a little milder in flavor than the usual stuff, but it’s still filled with deliciousness.
