If you frequently eat at Chick-fil-A, you are aware that the unique dipping sauce is what elevates the dish. On the chain’s website, this sauce was actually served in 285,895,456 servings in 2014. And Virginia deserves all the credit! A Fredericksburg restaurant manager got imaginative in the early 1980s.
Was Chick-fil-A sauce created by mistake?
In addition to being known for creating the chicken sandwich, Chick-fil-A is the top chain of fast food restaurants in the United States. The No. 1 dipping sauce today is their renowned Chick-fil-A Sauce, which was created by accident in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
When an old college roommate from the University of Georgia became a franchise owner, Hugh Fleming first learned about Chick-fil-A. After selling him some farm equipment, he later met Truett Cathy, the man who founded Chick-fil-A. According to Chicken Wire, Chick-fil-official A’s blog, Mr. Cathy gave Fleming the chance to work for the family-run business as an operator.
“They had a list of potential locations for openings in the following year at the time. If you see something there that you like, let us know, they commanded.” Fleming was reminded. “We traveled and decided on Fredericksburg.”
Fleming and his wife Carol launched their first eatery in Fredericksburg’s Spotsylvania Mall. In order to boost sales, worker Lisa Green went to the manager of a department store in the same mall and proposed to deliver Chick-fil-A during their inventory so the staff wouldn’t have to go outside to lunch (If you have ever worked retail, as I have, doing inventory is the worst and definitely needs incentive to keep employees engaged in a seemingly never-ending task). The chicken nuggets were well received, but they wanted something to dip them in. Interestingly, Chick-fil-A didn’t have dipping sauces at that time.
Fleming, who is known for listening to his clients, started working on a dipping sauce right away. He began with a friend’s honey-mustard salad dressing recipe and gradually added some of the sauce from the now-retired coleslaw from Chick-fil-A. It was a hit with the department store personnel, who began dining at his restaurant.
“We created it for them, and after that, more clients began requesting it. Fleming recalled that this was the exact moment the Chick-fil-A sauce was created.
Customers were given tiny cups of sauce to go with their nuggets as the sauce’s popularity among them grew over time. However, that wasn’t enough to meet the demand, so Fleming supplied the sauce in pump dispensers.
Then, one day, while on lunch break, a worker unintentionally combined the secret sauce with some barbecue sauce. So there you have it, my friends, the making of “Fleming’s Own” The Original Fredericksburg Nugget Sauce.
Some patrons had such a passion for the sauce that they would wash their drink cups in the lavatory and refill them with it. Three times a day, five gallons of the sauce were being made by Fleming’s staff.
Todd Fleming, the son of Fleming, recalls growing up with his brother Travis in the family business “We once attempted to remove it due to the amount of work required. However, when customers would enter and we informed them that we didn’t have it or couldn’t acquire it, they would essentially leave.
According to the older Fleming, “People would figuratively leave their food on the counter if we ran out of it. They would be furious with us and act as though we were responsible.”
This sauce was so popular that people offered to buy it. Again, Fleming began selling mason jars of his sauce while keeping an open ear to his consumers’ wishes. “Fleming’s Own” The Original Fredericksburg Nugget Sauce was written on his lovely label.
Despite the fact that it wasn’t an official Chick-fil-A sauce and was only available in the Fredericksburg region, word of it quickly spread to the Georgia headquarters, where they took notice. Chick-fil-A developed the Honey Roasted BBQ Sauce in an effort to imitate the sauce. Although it was considered to be a nice sauce and is still available on the menu, it was not THE special sauce.
When Fleming resigned in 2007, he freely provided Chick-fil-corporation A’s with his well-known secret formula. Free, that’s right, I said it. Even though he could have made millions of dollars by selling the valuable recipe, negotiating royalties, or engaging in any other lucrative economic transaction, he chose not to, and his motivations are in line with his well-established moral code.
Fleming claimed, “I could never have developed it without being under the Chick-fil-A roof. “As far as the success was concerned, it was a joint effort, in my opinion. It was my means of saying sorry to the business.”
Fleming’s method of repaying the business was an act of gratitude for the years of support it provided him while he struggled to launch the franchise during our country’s challenging economic circumstances in the early 1980s. A franchise back then cost $5,000 (equivalent to $10,000 today), and the business chose the site and paid for the land, structure, and machinery. In exchange, the operator did not receive a salary, paid a percentage of sales and equipment fees, and split the profits equally.
The president of Chick-fil-A visited the Fleming family’s business in those early years to see how things were doing and noticed the stress the uncomplaining employee was under.
Todd, the son, recalls: “He asked my father directly what he required to survive. Dad gave him a fair bit of information, and because he had such a high regard for my dad, he responded, “We’ll take care of it for you.” He went on, “There aren’t many businesses that make that type of commitment.
Always at the top of their game, Chick-fil-A took just a year to mass-produce and distribute Chick-fil-A Sauce across the country in 2008, and it didn’t take long for the rest of America to become dependent on Hugh Fleming’s creation. Not only is it the most popular dipping sauce at Chick-fil-A, but it is also the most popular right now nationwide.
It’s quite flattering to put the Chick-fil-A name on anything I made, Fleming remarked.
