What Is Chinese Satay Sauce Made Of?

Garlic, cumin, coriander, tamarind, coconut milk, peanuts, and soy sauce are the main ingredients of traditional Chinese satay sauce. However, more ingredients may be used, depending on whether you get satay sauce from a store or a Chinese or Thai restaurant.

One component of satay sauce that is neither vegan- nor vegetarian-friendly is fish sauce. Anchovies and sea salt are the main ingredients in classic fish sauce. Vegans should be careful of fish sauce while ordering Chinese food because fish are considered to be animals.

What is the base of Chinese satay?

It is a well-known satay variety among Indonesians and has its roots on the island of Madura, which is close to Java. The main component of the dish, which is typically served with mutton or chicken, is the black sauce, which is composed of salt, palm sugar (also known as “Javanese sugar” in Indonesia), garlic, deep-fried shallots, peanut paste, petis (a type of shrimp paste), and kemiri (candlenut). What’s in satay sauce?

Peanut butter, soy sauce, chilli flakes, fish sauce, coconut milk, light brown sugar, and crushed coriander are combined in a small saucepan and heated over medium heat.

But since even I occasionally have trouble locating Jimmy’s Sate Sauce, I made the conscious decision to develop a homemade Chinese Satay Chicken Stir Fry. I’m the first to confess it’s a homemade knockoff and that it’s not precisely the same. However, it is comparable and, more importantly, it is a delicious satay sauce that is simple to prepare with materials that can be found in most stores. Because it is juicier than the breast and tenderloin, I prefer to utilize chicken thighs in stir fry. If I use chicken breast for this recipe, I always tenderize it using a method from a Chinese restaurant that involves baking soda (bi-carb). This meal is basic and doable during the workweek. No chopping of lemongrass, no crushing of peanuts (I use lemongrass paste, it works better for this recipe). I insist on using both peanuts and fresh lemongrass in my “serious” Chicken Satay Curry recipe. It requires more work than this recipe and includes additional procedures and equipment.

It must be that peanut sauce is an American Fusion dish, and sauce producers who aim to introduce foreign flavors to your neighborhood store contribute to its appeal. It must have felt like a brilliant marketing move to associate it with Thai food. It’s okay as long as the Thai food isn’t “LaChoy’ed.”
