How is bean flour made?

  • The dried beans you intend to turn into flour should be chosen. There may be a small difference in the flavors or textures of certain beans. Common possibilities include navy, mung, lentil, and garbanzo beans.
  • To make the process simpler, divide the beans into smaller portions.
  • To your blender, add the first batch of beans.
  • To make sure all the beans are ground to powder, stop the blender, shake it about, and then re-blend the beans for 30 seconds on the highest setting.
  • Empty the blender of the bean flour, add the subsequent batch, and repeat the procedure.
  • Repeat this process until all the beans have been converted to flour.

White All-Purpose Flour

What uses are there for bean flour?

Normally, I only post recipes and little digressions about life on this blog, but today I thought I’d try a little something different. I just placed an order with Barry Farm, where I frequently buy sweeteners, flours, cereals, and specific baking materials in bulk (they have a pretty great selection of gluten-free items processed in dedicated facilities, too, if that pertains to you). I sometimes choose a few “surprise” goods to add to my cart to increase the value of the shipping since the price bottleneck tends to decrease with delivery expenses. I chose a $3 bag of white bean flour without knowing what I was getting myself into, but I though I’d give it a shot because I adore white beans!

When the flour was delivered, I was pleasantly pleased to see that it was remarkably soft and delicate and closely resembled all-purpose wheat flour. But I soon discovered that I didn’t know how to use it. Using it to thicken soup or gravy was advised in some online study, but I really wanted to make something I could take camping last weekend. To discover other applications for this item, I conducted some of my own experiments. I made the decision to post them here and add the finest white bean flour recipe I have so far, which is a pizza dough that can be used for any pizza or flatbread. Even better, excluding the white bean flour, it only calls for regular, everyday things that you probably already have.

What to do with white bean flour

  • In yeasted dough, use it. White bean flour will increase the butteriness of the final result when used in yeasted dough. However, using too much can ruin the gluten-provided structure of the dough. White bean flour can replace up to 40% of the flour in doughs with flat structures (like pizza crust), but for optimal results, start with closer to 25%. White bean flour can replace up to 25% of the flour in dough meant to produce something with more structure, like a loaf of bread; for optimal results, start with more like 10%, especially if the dough is whole grain (less gluten). Use wheat flour, not more white bean flour, to flour the surface when kneading the dough.
  • Use it in gravies and soups. The internet was correct: adding white bean flour to soup or sauce is a terrific way to give it creaminess, thickness, and nutrition. Make sure the food is cooked completely.
  • Make vegetable burgers with it. If the patties are too wet, I hesitate to add extra grain flour because I usually eat my veggie burger on a bun and doing so could upset the nutritional balance of the meal. This may be avoided by using white bean flour, which won’t alter the flavor of your vegetarian burgers. Once more, make sure the patties are well cooked.
  • When breading, use it. Try replacing up to 50% of the batter’s flour with white bean flour if you’re baking or frying something. Both its mild flavor and light hue won’t detract from the completed product’s appearance.
  • Include it in a blend of all-purpose gluten-free flour. With a few adjustments to the ratios and recipe, white bean flour might be used in place of chickpea flour, which is a common ingredient in gluten-free AP flour mixes.
  • Experiment! Look for other ways to include white bean flour in your prepared meals so you can benefit from all of its nutritious advantages! Oh, and do let me know if you find any more fantastic uses for it.

What not to do with white bean flour

  • simple applications. Any bean, even white beans, should not be consumed raw. The lectin included in beans is broken down during cooking since unbroken lectin can upset the stomach and occasionally trigger immunological reactions. The flavor of uncooked bean flour is also awful! Therefore, regardless of how you plan to use it, make sure your white bean flour is cooked all the way through.
  • replacement for chickpea flour. Although I still need to conduct additional research on if Burmese chickpea tofu can be created with white beans or whether chickpea omelettes can be made with them, I tried to make both of these dishes with a straightforward swap and it DID NOT work for me. You can’t easily replace chickpea flour with white bean flour 1:1 without making other adjustments, especially in recipes that don’t blend chickpea flour with other flours, like the ones I listed. White beans need a different cook time and liquid volume than chickpeas. White beans and chickpeas are both members of the Fabaceae family biologically, but as they belong to distinct genera, they don’t have the same characteristics. It’s a public record!
