Homemade Flour Tortillas RecipeThe Secrets

I have nothing at all against tortillas from the store. Some days, it’s very convenient to purchase prepared meals, and some organic brands provide flour tortillas of excellent quality.

Because of this, I decided to make my own flour tortillas using two staples from my cupboard that were free of dairy and oil.

Ingredients

These flour and water dough just require 2 ingredients:

  • This recipe can be made with white spelt flour, whole wheat flour, or all-purpose wheat flour. Avoid utilizing gluten-free flours. It will fail. Try my recipes for tortillas made with almond or coconut flour if you want to avoid gluten.
  • To activate the gluten in the flour and produce a soft dough that yields chewy tortillas, water should be lukewarm (approximately 98F; 37C), similar to the temperature of a warm bath.

Combining Ingredients

Make sure the water is not cold before adding it to the flour in the large mixing bowl; otherwise, the dough will be difficult to knead.

The dough should next be manually kneaded until a ball forms. The dough need to be smooth, elastic, and uniform.

If the mixture is too moist, add more flour; if it is too dry, add a tablespoon at a time more water.

Rolling Flour Tortillas

To roll and flatten wheat tortillas, you have two choices:

  • the least expensive method of rolling tortilla dough is with a rolling pin.
  • Tomato press
  • Since not everyone has a tortilla press at home, I’ll show you how to roll the dough instead. This is the quickest way to make flat tortillas with a wonderful round shape.

To begin, separate the dough into 6 smaller balls for smaller tortillas or 4 equal balls for 4 large tortillas.

Place the dough ball on the floured work surface in front of you and press down with your palms to flatten it into a thick circle.

Finally, roll the flour tortilla four times—four times in one direction, four times in the other.

Cooking The Flour Tortillas

For at least 60 seconds, heat a cast-iron skillet or nonstick pan over medium-high heat. Before adding the tortilla, you need a very hot pan.

Additionally, don’t oil the pan at all to avoid frying the tortillas and ruining their flavor.

Cook the flour tortilla for 2 minutes on one side in the pan. After that, flip it over and continue cooking the other side.

It needs to start blowing large bubbles fairly soon, and when there are a few spots that are a golden brown color, it is finished.

Is it possible to create bread using only flour and water?

All you need to make these flatbreads is flour, water, salt, a heat source, a skillet, and a cup with a volume of around 1/2 cup. Although a bowl is helpful, you could accomplish this without one. We used 1 1/2 cups of flour and half a cup of water because the ratio of flour to water is 3:1, but you may use any small bowl or cup you had. Simply mix three flour and one flour. Add a healthy spoonful of salt to that. If you’re having difficulties getting the dough to come together, add a tiny bit of water. Knead it all together until it’s reasonably smooth and doesn’t feel too lumpy and uneven. It is possible to add a bit more flour if the dough is extremely wet. Let your dough rest after that. To prevent it from drying out, cover it with a towel or a plate. The dough will be softer and simpler to work with after resting. Get a pan piping hot at this stage. You may do this on the stove, as you can see in one of my photos, or you can do it on top of a wood burner, like I did. Stretching and flattening the dough into thin, unpolished shapes will give it a more rustic appearance. They simply need to fry for about 30 seconds on each side in a hot skillet. And that’s all there is to it; the entire procedure only takes 45 minutes, including the time the dough needs to rest.

Let’s first go over certain cautions. I recognize…sounds risky, don’t you think? It’s not, I assure you.

You probably don’t need me to tell you this, but using the incorrect type or quantity of flour might result in all sorts of issues with your cake. They can’t really be switched out without at least some modifications.

It’s crucial to accurately measure the flour as well. Not packing it down is something you want to avoid. You can take it out of the flour bag with a scoop and then pour it into a measuring cup. Don’t use your measuring cup to scoop out the flour; doing so may compact the flour and cause your cake batter to have an excessive amount of flour.

Cake Flour:

Cakes are more delicate because less gluten develops when using cake flour, which has the lowest protein level. It can take up more liquid and sugar, resulting in a cake that is moister. It typically contains cornstarch, is bleached, and has a finer texture.

Take one cup of all-purpose flour and take out two tablespoons to produce cake flour. 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour should be swapped out for 2 tablespoons of cornstarch.

Self-Rising Flour:

The majority of cake recipes do not call for self-rising flour, but occasionally one does. This is essentially just flour that has already had baking powder and salt added.

To transform all-purpose flour into self-rising flour: To 1 cup of all-purpose flour, add 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.

Without baking powder, can a cake be baked?

Cakes that are light and fluffy are made by a process where acidic and alkaline substances react chemically to create carbon dioxide, which expands the batter. These gases are frequently produced by the leavening ingredients used in cakes, such as baking soda and baking powder. Each one’s impact on baked goods is different.

Sodium bicarbonate is the sole component of baking soda. According to NC State University, a reaction that results in gas bubbles that cause the batter to rise needs to be started by the addition of an acid, such as vinegar, lemon juice, buttermilk, or yogurt.

Baking soda and acid are both components of baking powder. Salts like calcium phosphate and sodium aluminum sulfate are the source of the acid. Carbon dioxide is released when these acids interact with the bicarbonate ions. According to the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service, one of the acids is fast-acting and is activated when you add liquids to the recipe. The other acid is slow-acting and is initiated by the addition of heat from cooking.
