ANYWAY. Isn’t it strange that today is National Cheese Curd Day? Although cheese is popular all across the world, aren’t cheese curds largely a Wisconsin specialty? When confronted with these deep-fried bullets of pure love, don’t out-of-staters frequently gasp in surprise or awe? Are residents of Vermont, Colorado, and other states that just topped Politico’s list of the best states to live in? “While Wisconsin ranked dead last in the “Which states had the best pandemic response?” piece, were they actually eating a ton of cheese curds? More power to them if they are.
Which gets me to Culver’s and Cousins, two other regional favorites. Let’s take a moment to appreciate how fortunate we are to name these two fast-food staples our own before we put their cheese curds against each other. Culver’s, the home of Butterburgers, frozen custard, and the Shorewood High School Alumni Hall of Fame, was founded in 1984 in Sauk City, Wisconsin. Cousins Sandwiches, founded in 1972 right here in Milwaukee, is known for its superior bread and subs, as well as its hilarious Vincent Price ads. I grew up believing these illustrious franchises were national problems, and I can’t tell you how disappointed I was when I found they weren’t. I grew up proud to call Wisconsin home; I can’t begin to express how disgusted I am that I now live in a state where 19,880 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the last seven days, and where state Republicans continue to show nothing but smug indifference or outright hostility to any semblance of a rational plan to save lives and put an end to this nightmare that could have lasted a few months but now appears to last into 2021 and possibly forever In Wisconsin, there were 1,017 current hospitalizations yesterday. In total, 1,536 people died.
On my way home from work on Wednesday afternoon, I stopped at Culver’s. Instead of ordering just curds, I decided to surprise my family by bringing home a huge bag of burgers, fries, chicken strips, cheese curds, and Mountain Dew. Everyone, take it easy! Dinner is on the table for Dad tonight! Because there is now no dine-in service at the Shorewood Culver’s, the drive-thru line can often stretch all the way to Capitol Drive. Happily, a squad of headset-clad employees is constantly on the line, urging you to drive into a parking place if you know what you want and accepting your purchase there. It’s a nice method, and it allows me to keep up with Mark Borchardt’s latest Culver’s tweets.
The cheese curds, on the other hand, are quite tasty! They’re a little tougher and nuggetier than I want, but they get the job done. “According to the Culver’s website, “every Culver’s Cheese Curd starts with farm fresh dairy from a Wisconsin family farm.” “The milk is then delivered to La Grander Hillside Dairy in Stanley, Wisconsin, our exclusive producer of Cheese Curds for nearly 20 years. They use only the freshest, unaged yellow and white Wisconsin Cheddar, which is then breaded with our special herb and spice blend.” Yum!
Oh, and Stanley, Wisconsin is roughly 70 miles south of Sawyer County if you’re not familiar with it. On the same day Wisconsin had to construct a fresh $15 million, 530-bed field hospital in State Fair Park, the Tavern League of Wisconsin filed a lawsuit against Gov. Tony Evers’ latest emergency health directive, and a judge backed with the Tavern League. Yes, the “alternative care facility” (ACF) is currently staffed for “just” 50 patients, and those patients will be low-risk patients “in the latter days of a typical hospitalization,” but good lord. We certainly missed the Wisconsin State Fair this year, but thanks to the Tavern League and a government that continues to do nothing in the face of death and sickness, including record-breaking COVID-19 figures, we might just make it this year. Yesterday, 3,107 new cases were registered in the state, the third-highest total on record for a single day. When is this going to be over?????
On Tuesday afternoon, I placed an order for Cousins from that newish delivery-only restaurant on National Avenue. Have I ever told you about the day I ordered Cousins and a guy in our building intercepted and ate my sandwich before knocking on our door and telling me to order a new one and walking away? Dude didn’t even offer to pay for the new one or pay me back! It’s a crazy moment. Anyway, on Tuesday, I tossed in a modest order of those bad boys on a whim, not even knowing that National Cheese Curd Day was just around the horizon (it seems to arrive earlier and earlier every year). Chips are usually my choice. Some think Cousins’ fries are stale, but I’m not sure.
What’s the status of Cousins’ cheese curds? They’re quite impressive. They’re huge, fluffy, and when you bite into them, you get that all-important squeak. Plus, in my cheese curd box, there was a single fry, and Cousins’ fries are very nice. I can’t believe these curds came from a fast food business, and I can’t believe this ghoul/dolt claims that the State Fair field hospital’s opening is a political ploy. This is a political ruse! When will Evers, Democrats, and everyone else with half a brain accept reality and just…get on with it? I’m not suggesting that we give up, and I’m certainly not advocating for a solution “I can only take so many impotent cries for common sense and collaboration before I lose it.” argument, but I can only take so many impotent pleas for common sense and cooperation before I lose it. Seriously, 400 years from now, when there are only seven people left on the world, Evers would still be saying, “I’m sad that the Republicans overturned my Safer At Home decree 400 years and five months ago, but we need to start cooperating.” Oh, my goodness, I’m losing it. I spent the weekend in a tiny town and saw, oh, about 90% of people not giving a damn about masks, social distancing, occupancy limitations, or anything else, and simply going about their business. The bars were packed. The gas stations were completely packed. An apple orchard was bursting at the seams. There was a band playing. The town’s largest grocery shop had a sign that basically read, “If you want to wear a mask, go ahead, but we won’t give a damn if you don’t.” Then I drove back to Milwaukee on Sunday, where we’re stuck in a strange limbo where some businesses are kinda-sorta open, some businesses are entirely closed, and some businesses are on the verge of closing any day now. And it was a lot of fun explaining to my kid that, while her cousin was going to school and seeing her classmates, she wouldn’t be seeing any of her Milwaukee friends or seeing the inside of a Milwaukee classroom for the remainder of the school year. Again, I’m not giving up or blaming those who are, in the end, doing the right thing. I’m aware of the villains. I’ve figured out who’s to blame. All of this has worn me down to the point of exhaustion. I’m exhausted. I’m at a loss for words. My mind is beginning to break down. My family is beginning to fall apart. Everything is beginning to break down. When I first wake up in the morning, the first thing that comes to mind is, “I can’t believe I have to go through this all over again.” This isn’t enjoyable. It was never enjoyable. I honestly don’t think this will ever end. Is it true that everyone is out for themselves? Is there anything that can be done? Is it too much to hope for? Anyone. Anything. Please. Please. Please.
Culver’s cheese curds pale in comparison to Cousins’ cheese curds. National Cheese Curd Day was launched by Culver’s in 2015, so I feel awful giving it to Cousins, but it’s real. When the first Culver’s debuted, custard stalls like Gilles (established in 1938) and Kopp’s (launched in 1950) had been offering these two dairy-laden delicacies side by side for decades.

Which begs the question: is it more astonishing that Taco Bell has been selling horse meat—or that Taco Bell exists at all—in the United Kingdom? Sure, the creator of the Double-Decker Taco Supreme is a fast-food staple in the United States. But, in the country of fish and chips, do gorditas actually sell? Not very, as it turns out. Mexican food, at least as interpreted by Taco Bell and Chipotle, has persistently failed to convert Britons. Indeed, Taco Bell’s initial attempt at a beef taco invasion in the 1980s failed by the mid-90s. This second attempt began in 2010. And, given today’s news, Taco Bell may be on its way to a new destination.
How can I save money at Culvers?
At every Culver’s I’ve visited, even adults can order a kid’s meal. Less calories, less money, and just enough to satisfy my stomach (but not my husband’s, who orders from the “adult” menu).
Each child’s meal includes a voucher for a free scoop of custard as well as a Scoopie token. Just remember to remove the coupon and token off the side of the kid’s meal bag before discarding it!
You can save 10 Scoopie tokens and use them later to earn a free kid’s meal. You can also save the coupon for a free scoop of custard for a later visit. It’s lovely to be able to go out for custard as a treat without having to spend anything! I keep the coupons and tokens (along with gift cards) in an envelope in my purse until I’m ready to utilize them.
