Foods to Avoid on the Daniel Fast
Bacon, beef, buffalo, eggs, fish, lamb, poultry, and pork are all examples of meat and animal products.
Agave nectar, artificial sweeteners, brown rice syrup, cane juice, honey, molasses, raw sugar, syrups, stevia, and sugar are all examples of sweeteners.
Ezekiel bread and all leavened bread & yeast baked products (if it contains yeast and honey).
Artificial flavorings, chemicals, food additives, preservatives, white flour, and white rice are all refined and processed foods.
Alcohol, carbonated drinks, coffee, energy drinks, herbal tea (for an explanation, check my FAQ page), and tea are all examples of beverages.
The Daniel Fast is based on the Bible’s account of the prophet Daniel’s experiences.
We have some insight into what he ate and didn’t consume from Scripture (e.g., Dan. 10:3), but we don’t know his whole meal. We do know the following: Daniel 1, for example, refused to eat the royal feast and instead ate only vegetables and drank only water. Another time (Daniel 10:2-3), he fasted and prayed, depriving himself of his favorite foods, meat, and wine. Bread and sweets, according to most commentators, would have been “choice food.”
This is why, in terms of what meals are allowed and which are prohibited, I believe there will be some difference in the modern-day Daniel Fast’s particular guidelines. My website’s food rules are the ones that are most usually adhered during a Daniel Fast. The goal of today’s Daniel Fast is not to replicate exactly what Daniel did, but rather to emulate the spirit with which he accomplished it. Daniel’s devotion to the Lord drove him to hunger and thirst for spiritual sustenance rather than physical food, which should be the desire of anybody who chooses to fast.
Is it possible to drink milk during the Daniel Fast?
Though there are different versions of the Daniel Fast, most people stick to it for 1021 days before reverting to their regular diet.
During the fast, people should eat only things that have been approved. Proponents of the diet, on the other hand, underline that it is meant to be a personal devotion to God, therefore it will appear different for each person depending on their needs and medical history.
Foods to eat
- Fats and oils Only vegetable oils, in modest amounts, are permitted, such as for sauteing vegetables. Olive oil, avocado oil, peanut oil, coconut oil, grapeseed oil, canola oil, walnut oil, and sesame oil are all allowed.
- Grains that are whole. Barley, brown rice, buckwheat, bulgur, freekeh, millet, oats, plain popcorn, quinoa, rye, sorghum, spelt, teff, whole grain pasta, whole wheat, and wild rice are all acceptable.
- Bread that hasn’t been leavened. Whole grain breads and flatbreads that are free of yeast, sweeteners, and preservatives are allowed.
- Spices and herbs As taste enhancers, any fresh and dried herbs and spices are acceptable and recommended, though salt should be used sparingly.
- Beverages. Your primary beverage should be water. In limited amounts, unsweetened plant beverages such as 100 percent fruit juice are permissible.
- Supplements and vitamins As needed, everyone is allowed. Protein powders should be minimally processed and adhere to the diet’s instructions if you use them.
Foods to avoid
- Dairy goods are dairy products. Milk, cheese, yogurt, and ice cream are among dairy products that should be avoided.
- Artificial sweeteners and added sugar Avoid things like table sugar, agave nectar, artificial sweeteners, brown rice syrup, brown sugar, cane juice, corn syrup, honey, malt syrup, molasses, raw sugar, and similar items.
- Foods that have been processed. Avoid foods that have been excessively processed or contain additional colors, flavors, or preservatives. Chips, sweets, chocolate, prepackaged meals, takeout, granola bars, and other processed foods are examples.
- Certain alcoholic beverages. Avoid alcoholic beverages, coffee, tea, kombucha, soda, and sugar-sweetened beverages.
Fermented foods (such vinegar and soy sauce), processed vegetable burgers, and tofu are also typically avoided.
The Daniel Fast does not involve calorie counting or restriction because it is not a weight-loss plan.
Instead, eat until you are satiated, which will be different for each individual. However, the plan recommends that you consume no more than you require to feel satisfied and nourished.
Animal products, leavened breads, added sugar, processed meals, caffeine, and alcohol are all prohibited on the diet. You are not forced to restrict calories and are free to consume permitted foods till you are satisfied.
On Daniel Fast, what can you drink?
Water is the only beverage allowed on The Daniel Fast, so you’ll want to put the coffee pot away for a few weeks. Wine, juices, kombucha, soda, and everything else is prohibited. Due to the flavoring chemicals, even flavored seltzer water like LaCroix is prohibited. While drinking solely water for 21 days may seem monotonous, adding fruits and herbs may quickly spice things up. Here are some of our favorite infused water recipes.
Is it okay for me to eat peanut butter during the Daniel Fast?
Peanut butter is allowed on the Daniel Fast as long as it doesn’t contain any artificial sweeteners or flavors. Corn syrup, agave, molasses, cane sugar, and honey are all additional sweeteners in several popular and widely accessible peanut butters.
Is popcorn permitted during the Daniel Fast?

Is it possible to drink caffeine while on the Daniel Fast?
I’ll have to wait another week before I can have my morning coffee again.
That’s because I signed up for my church’s annual first-of-the-year Daniel fast, which started on January 10 and finishes on January 31.
The Daniel fast entails a 21-day partial fast in which we eat like Daniel, the ancient Israelite prophet who was enslaved by the Persians at the time. Daniel began an eating regimen free of meat and alcohol in order to draw closer to God and be more receptive to what God had to say to him.
Daniel 1:12 “‘Please test us for ten days on a diet of vegetables and water,’ Daniel said” and Daniel 10:1-3: “‘Please test us for ten days on a diet of vegetables and water,’ Daniel said” “Daniel had another vision in the third year of King Cyrus of Persia’s rule. He realized the vision was about events that will occur in the future, such as war and immense sorrow. I, Daniel, had been in sorrow for three weeks when this vision came to me. I hadn’t eaten anything rich in a long time. I didn’t eat meat or drink wine for three weeks, and I didn’t use any scented lotions ” (New Living Translation).
Fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, and a small amount of oil are permitted during the Daniel fast. Yeast-free bread is required. There will be no animal products. There is no sugar in this recipe. There will be no refined, processed, or deep-fried foods. There will be no chocolate. We can also drink only water because Daniel stated that he only drank water. There will be no wine, liquor, or anything fermented.
I’m willing to forego the aforementioned. The coffee ban is the most difficult. According to the Q&A that comes with our quick guide, even decaf is prohibited.
I’ve followed several popular diets, including Dr. Ian Smith’s Fat Smash Phase I. Phase I, like the Daniel fast, forbids coffee consumption. But I always managed to persuade myself to make an exception, cheerfully adding liquid Stevia and sugar-free flavored creamer to that cup of rich brown nectar.
On Jan. 3, I went back to eating vegan, but I continued to drink coffee until I was invited to participate in the Daniel fast and asked, “Do you love God more than the food and drink you’re being asked to give up?”
If the answer is yes, the next logical step is to say, “Then, for God’s sake, take a 21-day break from it. Buttercup, get to work!”
But… but… “journalist” is practically synonymous with “coffee.” (OK, I seem to recall myths about us chain-smokers with whiskey flasks stashed in our desk drawers back in the day, but that’s out.) We drink coffee to cleanse our thoughts and jumpstart our productivity.
It, too, has its drawbacks. It has the ability to raise blood pressure, which I require in the same way that the Serenity Prayer requires printing on a beer mug. It disrupts sleep patterns, and I’m already sleeping like the princess “sleeping” on the pea in the Hans Christian Andersen fable… minus the royal status, all the mattresses and featherbeds, and a pea the size and texture of a jackfruit. Coffee can dehydrate you and deplete your vitamin supply. It does nothing to help my acid reflux. According to the lifehack article, it “may create auditory hallucinations.” (Dang! It’s no surprise that the Publishers Clearing House Prize Patrol keeps knocking!)
There’s no way to win: giving up coffee can lead to headaches, exhaustion, irritation (which I don’t need any more of), anxiety, and depression.
I told myself, “I can do this.” I can give up coffee and demonstrate that it has no control over me. I won’t miss the strong, unmistakable aroma that wakes me up in the morning when I put ground Folger 1850 coffee in the machine, add water, and turn it on. When my friend Pam and I go to church on Sunday and they’re still giving coffee to the non-Daniel fasters… including Pam, who believes she’d be straight-up Walking Dead if she didn’t have coffee. When I’m driving along Broadway in Little Rock or John F. Kennedy Boulevard in North Little Rock, I can choose not to look at Starbucks.
I’ve also managed to refrain from complaining about coffee during prayer. Refraining from whining is a solid start to/major component of an optimal prayer life for those of us who pray. Particularly in the here-and-now.
On the Daniel Fast, what kind of bread can you eat?
Pita bread can also be replaced with flat flatbread in the style of maize tortillas. Most store-bought corn tortillas include only two ingredients, both of which are easily digestible: water and corn. You can, however, make your own at home if you are so inclined. Kids enjoy assisting: they can operate the tortilla press or pat out the dough, and the results are frequently better than store-bought! Because injera and matzoh contain oil, the only flat breads that are Daniel Fast-compliant are corn tortilla-style flat breads. You can have hummus, baked falafel, a Greek salad, or your favorite vegetables wrapped in corn tortillas instead of pitas.

Oatmeal is allowed on the Daniel Fast because it is a whole grain. If you want to stick to the tougher rules, though, you should make your own oatmeal rather than buying it prepared. Quick cooking oats, which are processed and should be avoided in the diet, are used in packaged oatmeal. Oat bran, rolled oats, or steel cut oats are all options. To sweeten the oats, you can add raisins, bananas, diced or blended apples, peach, or pear. Spices like cinnamon and nutmeg can be added for flavor.
